Neatenize

About Neatenize

Neatenize is a simple, easy-to-use checklist website to help you reorganize, tidy up, and clean out. It’s loosely based on the Konmari method, which sorts items by category instead of room. While it’s a very thorough list, it’s not exhaustive; not all categories will apply to your needs, and you may have other categories not on this list. Use Neatenize as a starting point and framework.

It’s hard to feel like you’re making any progress when the to do list just keeps getting longer. To solve this, Neatenize takes the daunting task of cleaning and organizing your home and breaks it into bite-size sections. By sectioning each category into its own block in the page, Neatenize gives you achievable, measurable milestones.

While this particular project never took off as well as I hoped it would, I still use it for my own personal needs. A few of my friends also find it very useful, and I’ve had a few users find it through Google. Despite this, I have plans to eventually convert it to an iOS app.

My thought process

The subject matter and use case of the web application lends itself easily to distilling down into concepts:

  • Renewal
  • Cleanliness
  • Minimalism
  • Calmness

Round shapes soften the appearance of a logo, so I challenged myself to make the graphical portion of the logo a circle. I also wanted to make it very minimalist and chose to limit myself to only using one shape within the logo.

The offset and repeated crescents give the illusion of a full circle, and the analogous color scheme gives it a calming, pleasant gradient. The decreasing size of the crescents as well as the counter-clockwise rotation lead the eye around the circle in a direction resembling the refresh button of most user interfaces. Negative space, slightly offset from the center of the logo, also evokes a tunnel or doorway leading to a clear opening.

Choosing a font

I browsed several different font libraries before settling on Torus Pro. The rounded corners and letters work well with the graphical component of the logo, and the appearance of the type mirrors the minimalism of the graphic.
